Afternoon & Evening Ribolla Art Route Music Experience

We visit Mbokota Village near Elim, where Lucky Ntimani welcomes us to the Tinyiko Art Centre where his students create music on uniquely carved drums, marimbas and mbiras. Take a stroll to Pilato Bulala's home-studio in Tshivuyuni Village where he is hard at work on his next creation. We head to the Vutsila Mountain Art School, home of sculptor, musician and teacher, Thomas Kubayi for a Musical Soul-session under the spreading Maroela Tree. By the time we get back, the sun is turning the sky a hundred shades of orange and the band is setting up on Thomas' hand-carved benches around a crackling log fire. As Thomas explains how to use the Dembe calabash with a bow and the Khora harp, the Marimba and drums start up the ancient rhythms and the sunset sessions begin. Talented young musician, Kenny Nonyana jumps in, mixing Shangaan and Venda music; story-telling and praise singing to create a powerful experience for visitors of all ages as we find ourselves making music under the stars. The sundowner snacks are traditional ingredients with a modern twist and are washed down with traditional beer in a calabash pot.
